What a beautiful Gift Service!

The girls have been hard at work completing their holiday abstract noun project. They wrote scripts, made recordings, found images and created a tender Animoto. Enjoy! Click here.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic two weeks!

Yes, our classroom has an Elf! He's pretty historical, having spent time in the White House during the FDR administration. That's how he got his name, FDR E (I'm assuming the E stands for elf). Just another way to add to the Christmas spirit in Room M02. This week was the calm before the storm. Next week will be packed with Gift Service rehearsals and plenty of Christmas fun! It will be a homework free week. The girls will have spelling, Wordly Wise, and math assessments sprinkled throughout the week. A few may need additional practice at home. Please take a minute to review the week's schedule with your daughter. MANY THANKS!

The girls looked at more key events of the 2000's this week. We talked more about September 11, 2001. The girls were so thoughtful and reflective. This is a tough topic for fourth graders. We also looked at pop culture and discussed the explosion of technology. That part was fun:)

Joy, wonder, patience, peace, awe.....we are working with abstract nouns and the role they play at this time of year. The girls spent time reflecting on their holiday celebrations and are in the process of creating a multimedia abstract noun project. They are in the script writing phase now. Look for the final project on next week's post.

Fun with Wordly Wise words, Rudolph, and letter writing? Working with their weekly partners, the girls wrote collaborative Google Stories that included editing practice with a few very tricky homonyms. Take a look (sound works better in Chrome than Safari):

Has your daughter showed you her Storybird account? Some girls are are writing beautiful chapter  and picture books. Others are creating poetry. Buncee Buddies will be published for all to see in early February. The girls are putting the finishing touches on these. Editing practice was curtesy of the Grinch.

We will wrap up unit 3 in math next week. The girls will take the unit assessment on Thursday and as with all unit assessments there will be a detailed review in class. Christmas involves some pretty huge numbers and some pretty tough problem solving as the girls discovered in math this week. They practiced rounding, reading large numbers, large digit addition and subtraction. Did you know that the most expensively decorated Christmas tree had a price tag over 11 million dollars! Our classroom wreaths are now beautifully decorated with "mathaments" which was the result of hours of stellar math work.

A few girls told me I forgot to post their historical fiction newspaper stories, oops. Here's the link.

A few notes:
Homework- NO written homework this week. Continue to prepare for WW and spelling quizzes.
Special Week Sign-up Piper will be our Special Week girl next week.

The countdown has begun! The Fourthies are embracing this holiday season in a BIG way. They have a holiday site just for them- packed with many learning activities. On Wednesday we enjoyed out 50th Compliment Celebration with a "Snuggle In." Fun!

History4fourthies has taken us into the turn of the 21st century. The girls will be completing the jobs about this decade during the next couple of weeks. After that we will move back in time to the turn of the 20th century.

The girls continue working with order of operations and open sentences in math. This week's fact contract featured a daily EDpuzzle with a single problem solving activity. Each EDpuzzle has a Christmas themed problem. Many of the video clips have a message. Check them out if you have a chance. The girls love to talk about the message and their problem solving strategies. Here's an example:

The girls got clever with their fact practice. They earned Christmas lights for house decorating (the better your fact recall the more lights you earned) and then wrote a persuasive letter to the mayor asking for their house to be included in the Tacky Light Tour. Look for these when papers come home next week. Ask your daughter to explain what a "mathament" is. The girls started earning them this week. The more mathaments earned the more festive our classroom will look. And as an added bonus their math skills will be strengthened.

Summarizing key events was the focus in this week's writing lab. The girls wrote from the perspective of a young girl and explained an encounter with "The Man on the Moon." We dabbled with Google Story Writer. Next week the girls will write a faux story and practice editing- especially THERE, THEIR, and THEY'RE.

A few notes:
Homework- We chatted about the importance of planning ahead especially during this bust time of year.
Special Week Sign-up Piper will be the next Special Week girl on 12/12
Carpool Helper CalendarMolly will represent our class next week.
* Winter Sports Fun Program- Details here
* SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) Outreach Program - our class has been asked to bring in gifts for a 15 year old boy.

ERB week has come to an end. Our classroom is collaborative, interactive, and buzzing with non-stop creativity. The ERBs, on the other hand, are multiple choice, silent, and black and white. Not quite what these engaging Fourthies are used to. But... the girls rose to the challenge and approached the week of testing with positive attitudes and determination. And I reminded them to look on the bright side- it was a homework free week!

Our class was well represented in the recital this morning. AnnE, Aseye, Madigan, Piper, and Powell performed beautifully!

No worries-it wasn't all testing. The girls received their logins for Storybird. Some of the girls had accounts in third grade and those who didn't were given a quick tutorial by a friend. Storybird combines art and literature. The girls choose artwork to inspire their writing. Here's an example from Alex (written in her mother's language):

We are reading All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. The novel is set in New York City at the turn of the 20th century which will be a great segue into the study of the decades. More on this after Thanksgiving.

The girls are working on the Buncee Buddies (Be the Change You Wish to See in the World) and a few have finished. They will be shared with the global Buncee community. Take a look at Ibby's and Leslie's:

Order of operations was the focus in math this week. We will work on this skill for many weeks. I reminded the girls that many math concepts are ONLY mastered after lots of practice. Ask your daughter if she can explain this image:

A few notes:
Homework- no homework next week. Homework resumes after Thanksgiving.
Carpool Helper CalendarAnne will represent our class next week.
* Tuesday, November 22- Math Expo at St. Christoper's- FIELD TRIP ATTIRE (We will be walking to St. Chris; bundle up it looks like chilly weather.
* Book Fair on Wednesday, November 30 from 3:10-3:30

Having a little fun at Mt. Vernon

I love being away from St. Catherine's with the girls. A day off campus with our girls always reinforces what a blessing it is to be a teacher at this incredible school. You know when you are out in public and you hope your kids are their best selves and then that sense of pride you get when they are? Now multiply that feeling by eighteen and you can understand how I felt after our field trip to Mt. Vernon. One cafeteria worker pulled me aside and told me she had never seen a group of students like our yellow capped crew!

On to our academic highlights, we spent a good deal of time exploring past presidential races and examining the electoral college. The girls used the site for addition and subtraction practice. We talked about the difference between the electoral vote and the popular vote. Your daughter can explain using this picture:

Using data from trick-or-treating, the girls created charts in Google spreadsheets and practiced labeling axes and adding clipart. The girls problem solved with Susan B. Anthony and are now working on an EdPuzzle about Veterans Day. We continued working with factor pairs and multiples. The girls get a reprieve from a fact contract next week due to ERB testing.

The finishing touches were put on last week's writing lab. The girls created beautiful magazine covers celebrating their partner. Their writing is outside the classroom for all to enjoy. We are compiling a collaborative slideshow of their covers:

Buncee Buddies were introduced and the girls have embraced this project with tremendous energy and creativity. The challenge is to create a Buncee that addresses this quote: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi. Our Buncees will be shared with classes all around the world. This is an ongoing project that the girls will work on for several weeks. Three Word Thursday was collaborative this week. The girls LOVE reading and commenting on each other's work. This is probably a good time for your daughter to give you a tour of her Google Classroom and Drive. You can see all that has been created during the first quarter. They've been busy!

There continue to be cases of lice across all grades in the lower school. 1st grade and 2nd grade are seeing the most cases. Please be sure to check your child's head for signs of lice or nits. If you think your child may have nits or lice and are unsure, the nurse can check your child. Also, if you do find lice, please contact the nurse so that she can discuss the most effective treatment options. Here is a link to Health News for additional information on lice.

Wordly Wise Dress- Up Day..... A great way to get in the mood for Halloween!

Halloween is a great way to begin this post. The girls had a blast on Monday. They went to each of the Fourthie classrooms and enjoyed a Halloween themed activity. A special HUGE thank you to the parents who sent in treats and to Cari Shannon who manned the ship.
                    http://www.rasaint.net/ - Glitter Graphics
Ask your daughter to explain a "Product Party." Only certain factor pairs are invited. Sometimes these parties can be very exclusive. We are working with factors and multiples and even glimpsed into prime factorization this week. The girls understand the importance of having accurate fact recall. I know I sound like a broken record but please encourage your daughter to practice, practice, and practice. The pace and difficulty of the math curriculum is increasing, and no one wants to be slowed down by sluggish fact recall. The girls had some choices in problem solving this week. Some even attempted the challenge EdPuzzle which most certainly was a challenge! Factor trees were decorated with factor candy corn (naturally) and geometry specific jack-o-lanterns. The girls love when art and math come together.

The St. Catherine's Day service was beautiful. The choir, dancers, and readers rehearsed a great deal this week and it paid off. The Fourthies' participation was flawless. Many girls were in and out of the classroom due to practice, so we have some loose ends to tie up and a few assignments that we didn't get to. No worries- this group of Fourthies is flexible and focused and we will back on track in no time.

The girls are doing a great job reading Newsela articles. Their comprehension is improving and their reading levels are rising. I love when the girls choose to read Newsela articles on their own.

We are working with compound sentences and the ever popular FANBOYS. The girls interviewed a classmate and summarized their findings in a detail packed paragraph. Several girls opted to record their interview just to be sure they didn't miss any details. The girls carefully edited their work and spent time considering strong opening and closing sentences. Then they created a magazine cover to highlight their partner. I'll share all of these next week. To give you an idea, here's Piper's magazine cover celebrating Isabelle:

Just another week of innovating, creating, collaborating, and problem solving. The girls had a blast working with Mrs. Houston's first graders during Innovation Day. They designed and constructed a house that could withstand the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Wolf (aka a hair dryer). I loved how gentle and encouraging the girls were with the first graders. Be sure to check out all of the pictures taken by our class photographers.

We are definitely gearing up for Halloween and Wordly Wise Dress-Up day on Monday! Halloween was part of just about everything we did in math. The girls worked with problem solving and logic scenarios. They located scary places throughout the United States and worked with map scales and computed population differences. We chanted to Ghost Busters during a Musical Moment. Their accuracy is getting stronger with each and every calculation they perform. They problem solved with a hotdog eating contest. Gross and fun at the same time:) Many are seeing the benefits of using the Singaporean bar model method of problem solving especially as the difficulty increases. The girls successfully completed their Unit Two math test. Remember that every math test has a listening and writing component which takes some out of their comfort zone. The girls are rising to the challenge. Speaking of math challenges.... keep encouraging your daughter to work on the weekly challenges. Math chicks are adding up!
The next math unit works with order of operations, factors, multiples, and of course lots of problem solving.

The girls completed their presidential research by creating a magazine cover that featured their president. They focused on using capitalization correctly and were very creative in the process. The covers look authentic and were fun to make and this got the girls talking about extending the project. Ibby's idea was to create a magazine cover about their weekly partner. What a great idea! Next week's writing lab will include Ibby's awesome suggestion.

We continue to work with parts of speech (especially verb tense) and attention to detail in the editing process. Their Halloween stories are on display for all to read. The girls LOVE sharing their work and added their 3WT (Three Word Thursday) writing to a shared slideshow. We had a few oops along the way but problem solved ways to improve the next time.

A few notes:
* Wordly Wise Dress up Day is Monday!!!!!
Special Week Sign-up Elizabeth is the Special Week girl next week
Homework is posted for the week for family planning. (There is a tiny assignment on Halloween.)
Carpool Helper CalendarMeg will represent our class next week.
* The St. Catherine's Day service is at St. Stephen's on Friday. The girls should wear a skirt, dress, or nice slacks.
* Field Trip to Mount Vernon on 11/9 (more on this next week).
* The girls love seeing themselves in the Wordly Wise quizzes. So if you have a chance send a pic or two of your weekend activity and I'll add it to our quizzes. Nothing like a little relevance to perk up student interest.

I enjoyed meeting with everyone during our conferences. I am so blessed to be a part of this incredibly energetic, creative, mathemagical class! Never a dull moment in Room M02!

Our class chapel was the highlight of my week. I reminded the girls that chapel is chapel and plays are plays and we were not providing a performance but rather sharing a homily. We talked about the message that we wanted to deliver to the Lower School- Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and how this program helps thousands of children all over the world. The girls were articulate and poised. I am so very proud of them. The class received MANY compliments about their chapel. The only negative was the absence of Ibby:( We hope she is on the mend and back in action on Monday.

We used the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF website for math problem solving. Sometimes we need a reminder about how truly fortunate we all are (myself included). And keeping with the Halloween theme, the girls problem solved with candy alternatives. Bet you can't watch this without cracking a smile. Matific is all the rage! The girls are working through assigned modules and earning adorable monsters along the way.  Math was moved outdoors today to celebrate the end of a summer like week. They went on a scavenger hunt around our beautiful campus, solved riddles, and scanned QR codes for some team problem solving and calculating.
The girls are in the process of a very fun writing lab. They morphed their faces in Photo Booth and will explain how a witch was able to cast a spell on them. The focus is using strong verbs and adjectives and most importantly self-editing (not an easy task for fourth graders). Wordly Wise assessments will be getting a little tougher. A few girls were discouraged  with their grades. I assured them that there is always a learning curve. Below is a special message for the girls about Wordly Wise Dress-Up Day which coincidentally is on Halloween:

Do you dream about a special WW word? Do you get happy when you see a WW word in a book you are reading or hear a WW word in a song?  Do you answer questions and deliberately try to use WW words in your responses? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you officially have WW Fever! No need to be worried. It happens to most Fourthies and it’s a cause for celebration. We will celebrate WW Fever on 10/31/16. Start thinking about a word that tickles your fancy. How could you dress to represent or explain the word? What clever outfit could you create? Each Fourthie is encouraged to come dressed as a WW word ((from lists 1–5) on 10/31/16. We’ll take pictures and create our very own picture dictionary. So, develop an idea but don’t utter a word to anyone. You may be eager to share your ideas with your peers. Resist the temptation to disclose your outfit to friends. We want everyone to be surprised. I can’t wait to applaud your creativity.

Innovation Day is next Thursday from 1:00-2:30. Our class is paired up with Ms. Houston's class. The design challenge is:
Little Pig, Little Pig, Let Me In!
Design and build a freestanding house that will withstand the force of wind created by a blow dryer for 30 seconds and is not taller, wider, or deeper than 12 inches.

The girls may start bringing in materials on Tuesday. Some suggestions: sugar cubes, Easter grass, popsicle sticks, spaghetti, marshmallows, cotton balls, straws, construction paper strips, recycled paper, toothpicks, Styrofoam peanuts, small sticks, disposable plates, cups, fabric swatches, etc. Possible materials for connecting pieces: paper clips, rubber bands, string or thread (no ropes, bricks or rocks). I know their creativity will be off the charts!

A few notes:
Special Week Sign-up Ibby is the Special Week girl next week
Homework is posted for the week for family planning.
Carpool Helper CalendarPowell will represent our class next week.
* Please remind your daughter to bring her recorder to music class. Several forgot last week and were disappointed in themselves.
